iitu Hand-DrawnTypeface Specimen.
Why do I speak English better than my mother tongue, Kikuyu? By not speaking my native language, I am unable to access a part of my identity and authentically express myself. How can communication design help me learn my native language and empower my peers to do the same? I created the typeface iitu, which translates to ours. The type design is inspired by Mt. Kenya, a significant cultural landmark for the Kikuyu community in Kenya. The type specimen takes the form of a motion graphic video, social media stories, and dynamic patterns based on the ideas of joy, peace, and hope.
